This behavior is by design and is the result of the Windows printing architecture. Right-clicking on the printer and choosing “Printing preferences” from the menu changes the preferences of the current user. These are the default settings for an application when it starts a print job. On the other hand, clicking on the “Preferences” button on a print dialog changes the settings for the current print job only, this is why the “Edit paper list…” button is disabled and “Restore Defaults” is missing.
