Bates numbering (also known as Bates stamping, Bates branding, Bates coding or Bates labeling) is used in the Legal, Government, Medical, and Business fields to place unique identifying numbers, with or without a date/time-stamp, on documents and images as they are processed.

For example, during a legal proceeding a law firm may use Bates numbering so that each page and document can have a unique Bates number to be referenced in the legal proceeding. Healthcare Providers use Bates numbering in the storing and achieving of patient’s medical records, where thousands of documents can be involved, doctors can quickly reference a chart or locate certain notations based on the unique bates number.

This process provides identification and protection as well as automatic consecutive numbering of the documents or images.

Most American law firms and State and Federal agency rely on Automated Bates Numbering to add Bates numbers on every page of their documents by processing them through a virtual printer that then adds the Bates Number in the file name. The Bates Numbering is available for the most commonly used file format such as PDF and TIFF. The advantage of TIFF file format over PDF is that content of TIFF files cannot be edited and the Bates Number cannot be altered or removed.
